Electric Power Steering System

The electric power steering (EPS) system assists a driver’s steering by reducing the steering force necessary for operation.
How the system works:
- The EPS electronic control unit (ECU) calculates the assisting power needed, in accordance with the driver’s steering operation and the vehicle’s speed.
- To reduce the driver’s steering force, the EPS motor rotates the steering gear based on the assisting power needed.
Compared with a hydraulic power steering system that continuously drives a hydraulic pump, the EPS system drives the EPS motor only when necessary, resulting in reduced fuel consumption.
DENSO supplies compact EPS ECUs for a wide range of vehicles.
Benefit and Features
- DENSO’s EPS ECU has a DC-DC converter to control the EPS motor at a higher voltage with a lower current, reducing the size of the ECU as well as the power consumption of the ECU and the motor.
