Electronic Toll Collection System

The electronic toll collection (ETC) system allows drivers to pass through toll gates without stopping for toll payment.
In the early 1990s, DENSO started researching and developing ETC systems, including product technology and infrastructures, in cooperation with Japanese government, academia, and other companies. In 2001, when the Japanese government introduced the ETC systems, DENSO launched on-board equipment as well as roadside antennas for the ETC systems. Currently, DENSO's on-board equipment captures the top share in Japan.
Benefits and Features (On-board Equipment)
- Small size and high reliability
- DENSO developed a customized IC that integrated a control section, an ETC processing section and a security module section, reducing the size of the on-board equipment.
- The on-board equipment uses a microwave monolithic integrated circuit for the communication section, achieving highly reliable communication and further reducing the equipment size.
